For all of my friends back in the States, especially those that enduring the bomb cyclone – I’m sorry.  Keep reading – maybe you’ll feel transported.

My time in Santiago, Chile has been magical.  Growing up in Minnesota then New Hampshire, I’ve only known cold temperatures for the months of December through April.  The snow was beautiful for the first week. After that, communities bonded over their desire for warmth and signs of spring.  Well folks, the best way to prevent this – escape it.

I rung in the 2019 with my We Roam crew in Santiago, Chile, our home for the month, where we were watching fireworks on a rooftop patio in dresses or shorts.  I was able to spend the next couple of days wandering through gardens and museums, clad only in shorts and a tank top.  Around this time, New England was hit with the “bomb cyclone.”  I was a pious daughter and called to check in on my parents.  After 3 minutes of sitting outside to talk with them, my phone shut off.  It had overheated.  Bad timing to hear about the snowstorm.

Why do I bring this up? Before being in Santiago, I didn’t realize how much of a warm weather and sunshine lover I am.  I always prided myself on being from the “arctic tundra” but there is no replacement for daylight until 9pm and watching the sunset from a rooftop bar.  Realizing small things about myself has made this journey so worthwhile.  When I decided to join We Roam, I wasn’t looking for any big self-discovery; I just wanted to mix up my daily rhythm. The consistency of change has become what I needed – a breath of fresh air.

Santiago has been an incredible city to explore and the complete opposite of Rabat.  I’m on the 13th floor of a 23 floor apartment complex, located on top of a grocery store, within a 3 minute walk of the workspace and endless restaurants.  Convenient is the one word I would use to describe my current lifestyle. Everything I need is within a 5 minute walk.  Am I getting the most authentic Chilean experience? Probably not, but I’m not sure I would ever find that in a big city.  I think this has helped drive my goal for the next country – make a local friend.

This city is unlike any I have visited before.  Whichever direction I look, I see mountains (or giant hills as the description of “mountains” is saved for the Andes).  Parks dot the city, most main roads are lined with trees and the rooftops have potted plants aplenty.  It is really obvious how Chilean culture wants to integrate with it’s natural surroundings.

On the flip side, Santiago is a city that has been built, destroyed, built and destroyed many times over. On our walking tour, the guide kept us guessing whether it was a fire or earthquake that destroyed a specific  buildings – always one of those two answers.  I remember hearing about the devastating earthquake several years ago but there wasn’t any evidence of it. The city has done a remarkable job of rebuilding.

This month is going to fly by and I hope to eat the majority of my meals outside, soak in the sun and recharge after some colder months.  As this is my first time to South America, I really had no idea what to expect.  So far, I’m loving every moment.
