Our local workspace in Buenos Aires

I’m really lucky to work for a large tech company that promotes opportunities for growth that might be out of our everyday thinking box. I’m also really lucky that they have offices all over the world.  I’ve received a lot of questions from family and friends about what it’s like to really work abroad as a digital nomad.  Absolutely amazing 99% of the time.  Completely nerve-wracking 1% of the time when there are issues.  That being said, in today’s interconnected world, most things can remedied with minimal impact.

I’m no tech genius but I consider myself pretty competent. I’ve grown up with the mentality that if I try something and it doesn’t work, you have an undo button for a reason. The being said, I tend to have the worst luck with laptops. My old one was re-imaged 4 times. My favorite was when I was working in Paris and the IT guys thought I rode a motorcycle to work because everything was so loose inside. Nope.

Sunday I thought I’d do some writing while enjoying the brightness of my Buenos Aires balcony only to discover that Windows Update were pushed over the weekend and the mandatory restart was required. Ugh- is this going to take 20 minutes? Not this time. Nice and fast but all Office apps were corrupted in the process. Hmmm. How how how?  Million dollar question.

After my momentary panic attack, I realized that we have an office a 30 min cab ride away. The people have been so friendly here!  The office is small so there isn’t a local IT Helpdesk and I’m working with the team India but I get to use their infrastructure (and drink their coffee). As I continue my remote adventure, I want to do a better job of connecting with our employees at our local offices. It’s too easy to become silo’d in my world of consulting and operations. Our team does amazing things and operate is so many different parts of the business. This is an amazing opportunity for me to put more pieces of the company puzzle together.

This is the next chapter of when life gives you lemons.
