One of the first questions that always comes up when I describe to someone that I’m living abroad and working remote, is one word accompanied by a confused look on their face.  “Why?”  Depending on the person, they either received a sarcastic “Well, why not” from me or the real reason, which is that I love living in different places and understanding the next layer of culture. Recently, this has been about questioning assumptions.

In November 2016, I was in Cambodia for two weeks.  Southeast Asia has always had an intimate familiarity to me.   On this trip we took an 8-hour ferry from Battambang back to Siem Reap.  This ferry ride was unique as it was a locally operated ferry that dropped off produce along the route.  Local women delivering the fruits and vegetables jumped off the boat roof and onto the roof of their houses. The route, though,  is best known for going through the floating villages.  These villages are exactly what they sound like – they completely float.  At face value, this is interesting to see. The houses ride the river as its height changes with rainfall and kids row themselves to school.  But, as I started to think more about these villages, the more I become aware of how different this lifestyle which lead me to question “What is the good life?”  These kids have never seen a road before or ridden a bicycle, but they are expert boat handlers by the age of 10.  Villages are dependent on the boats to drop off supplies, but they have an extend community ecosystem that works to support each other.  There is no right or wrong, good or better life; just different.  The morning after floating through these villages, I realized how much of life I was missing out while I lived in the comforts of Boston and applied to Wy_Co.

Why did I tell the tale above? Because this past Sunday, I traveled to Tigre and experienced something so similar that the excitement and emotions of why I’m on this trip came flooding back.  Tigre is an island town, created by multiple rivers, which was founded in 1820 after floods destroyed settlements in the area.  Tigre really reminded me of the floating villages of Cambodia.  While the residents were much closer to modern amenities and houses were anchored to the ground, it appeared that you could only reach town, school or your friend’s place by boat.  We have had several heavy rains recently, so the water level was higher than normal; however, the majority of the properties had docks which appeared to be completely disconnected from the house.  My guess is that there was a good 6-9 inches of standing water.  Some houses looked like islands by themselves while others had a small patch of green resembling a yard.

It was a beautiful hour-long cruise through the river delta and I was left with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and happiness.  I’m still having the similar thoughts that I did when I was in Cambodia but instead of just wishing to be living a more immersive life, I am now.  Going through the canals, I found myself wondering how often families go to the grocery store by boat, how many of the houses are inhabited year-round and where do the dogs run around?  A whole spectrum of thoughts from the practical to the what ifs, but it’s all boils down to being exposed to a different lifestyle and reframing expectations.
